eBay drops seller fees in the U.K. for most products to combat competitors like Vinted and Depop. This move, already successful in Germany, aims to boost C2C sales. Fashion resale is growing fast, with the global market hitting $197B last year.
eBay, facing growing pressure from younger platforms like Vinted and Depop, has removed domestic seller fees in the U.K., with cars being the only exception. This follows a similar strategy in Germany last year. By removing final-value fees, eBay hopes to regain ground lost to marketplaces that don’t charge such fees. In the U.K., competition is fierce, especially in the second-hand clothing space, where sales jumped 18% last year, reaching $197B globally.
Online fashion resales are thriving. With high inflation, more U.K. consumers are choosing second-hand clothes, driving demand on platforms like Vinted and Depop, which don’t charge final-value fees either. Vinted, now valued at $4.5B, saw sales surge 61% in 2023 to €600M. eBay, recognizing the potential in this booming market, dropped fees for fashion items in April. Now, it’s expanding that to all products (except cars), potentially increasing the variety of items listed.
eBay’s CEO, Jamie Iannone, believes that cutting seller fees will improve the "breadth and depth of inventory" by making it easier for consumers to sell. eBay’s German experiment proved successful in attracting more sellers, leading to increased buyer choice. However, the company plans to introduce a “buyer-facing” fee next year, a model similar to Vinted’s, where buyers pay for extra protections. This signals that eBay may shift focus towards monetizing other services like ads and financial tools.
Though this change is currently limited to the U.K., many wonder if the U.S. will follow suit. eBay’s top markets are the U.S., U.K., and Germany. It wouldn’t be surprising if eBay extended this fee cut to its domestic market. The platform already generates significant revenue from services like shipping and advertising. The potential for eBay to make up for the lost seller fees by monetizing these areas is high, helping it maintain its competitive edge in a rapidly evolving marketplace.
