Alibaba predicts double-digit sales growth for Singles' Day in Hong Kong, supported by a $142M promotion offering free shipping on Taobao orders. The three-month initiative launched on October 1, targeting key categories like electronics and fashion.
Alibaba launched a three-month, $142M promotion on October 1, 2024, waiving delivery fees for Taobao orders over 99 yuan ($13.50) in Hong Kong. The promotion covers categories like fashion accessories, electronics, and skincare. This move is part of a broader strategy to grow Alibaba’s international presence through its Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group (AIDC).
David Ye Jianqiu, GM of Tmall Taobao World, said the promotion has garnered positive feedback from users, contributing to double-digit growth in gross merchandise value (GMV) and order volumes in Hong Kong. “The user feedback on this free shipping plan is quite positive,” he noted. With more than half of Hong Kong's population using Taobao, the city remains crucial for Alibaba’s expansion plans.
Alibaba is using the promotion to boost its presence outside mainland China as competition intensifies. Rivals like JD.com are also investing heavily in Hong Kong, with JD.com announcing a 1.5 billion yuan ($213M) campaign that includes free delivery on orders over 299 yuan. Pinduoduo has been enhancing delivery services for Hong Kong since 2022.
Alibaba has earmarked 40 billion yuan ($5.7B) to support Taobao and Tmall merchants during Singles' Day. This funding helps merchants offer competitive prices and reach more international consumers. The pan-fashion free shipping plan, launched in July 2024, extends to markets like Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia, boosting the appeal of Alibaba’s e-commerce platforms.
