Sam's Club's new AI exit tech, launched in January, is now in 120 U.S. stores. This tech speeds up customer exits by 23% and reduces staff at checkouts. Full rollout planned for 2024.
Sam's Club has introduced AI-powered exit technology in 120 clubs, which is 20% of its U.S. locations. This tech, first shown at January's Consumer Electronics Show, lets members leave the store without checks, cutting exit times by 23%.
The AI system uses computer vision and digital tech to capture and verify items in customers' carts as they leave. With fewer than 40 staff members involved, this streamlined approach has made exits quicker and more efficient.
Sam's Club pointedly noted its success as it rolls out its exit tech, in contrast to Amazon. Amazon has scaled back its checkout-free technology, citing challenges and a reliance on human workers to support its AI systems.
The retailer is optimistic about the technology's future, planning to extend it to all locations by the end of the year. This expansion is set to improve the shopping experience across all Sam's Club stores in the U.S.
