AI has become vital for Etsy, a platform known for handmade goods. CEO Josh Silverman stated, "You couldn't run Etsy without AI," during the Web Summit in Lisbon. The company has developed into a $1B e-commerce giant with 7 million sellers and over 90 million buyers. Competing with top players like Amazon and Shein, Etsy's AI helps enhance search relevance and protect product authenticity. Silverman highlights that traditional search engines can struggle with distinct product classifications.
Despite technological advancements, Etsy's sellers have expressed concerns. Two years ago, Etsy increased its commission from 5% to 6.5%. This change sparked protests among sellers, leading to many putting their shops on "vacation mode." While Silverman claims 99.5% of sellers continued their work, he recognizes some artists are less inclined towards business. "Most of them are passionate to be artists," he said, revealing the artist's dilemma in adapting to a competitive marketplace.
Complaints over rising commission fees and the encroachment of mass-produced items have caused unrest among sellers. Following an IPO in 2015, controversies arose regarding product authenticity, leading to lawsuits. Additionally, Etsy faces challenges from AI-generated listings. Silverman admits that not banning AI-generated art has caused debate, but he stressed the importance of adapting to changing consumer preferences. Under Silverman's leadership since 2017, Etsy aims to balance company growth with the needs of its sellers. He reflects that buying is a "gifting experience" that brings joy, and through their platform, sellers can thrive. While bringing up the metaphor, Silverman faced backlash due to workforce cuts, yet remains focused on blending seller and company interests: "We make the pie bigger for everyone."
