Coupang, South Korea's e-commerce giant, appoints Asha Sharma, former Microsoft AI specialist, to its board. Sharma's experience spans roles at Microsoft, Meta, and Instacart. This follows Coupang's $500M acquisition of Farfetch in January.
Coupang, the South Korean retail giant, has appointed Asha Sharma, an experienced AI specialist from Microsoft, to its board of directors. Sharma, who served as corporate vice president at Microsoft, has a rich background in AI and product leadership. She also held significant roles at Meta and Instacart, helping scale Facebook Messenger to billions of users.
Sharma’s extensive career started in marketing at Microsoft. She advanced to VP of product at Meta, where she played a pivotal role in developing Facebook Messenger. She then moved to Instacart as the operating officer. Her deep knowledge in AI and product management aligns perfectly with Coupang's innovative mission.
“Asha's deep product and practical AI expertise align with our mission to drive innovations that wow our customers,” said Bom Kim, founder and CEO of Coupang. This strategic hire is expected to help Coupang build more breakthrough experiences for customers around the world. The appointment is a significant step as Coupang aims to strengthen its technological capabilities.
This move follows Coupang’s acquisition of British luxury e-tailer Farfetch in January, a deal that brought in $500M in capital to Farfetch. Despite record high turnover, the acquisition impacted Coupang's net results, putting them in the red according to the latest quarterly results. The investment was intended to secure Farfetch's future and transition it into a private company.
What impact will Asha Sharma have on Coupang's innovation strategy?
