Amazon and Italian state railways launch rail service between Italy and Germany, aiming to cut 9,000 tons of CO2 annually. New rail links support sustainable transport in line with EU goals.
Amazon is taking a significant leap in sustainable transportation by launching a rail service with the Italian state railways, Ferrovie dello Stato (FS). Two new routes from Germany to Italy will transport products between distribution centers, aiming to drastically reduce carbon emissions. This strategic move not only boosts Amazon’s logistics efficiency but also supports its sustainability goals.
The newly established rail routes are expected to save around 9,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually. This effort is part of Amazon's broader strategy to increase the use of rail and sea transport across Europe. With nine weekly trains set to run on these routes, the impact on reducing road transport emissions is significant.
Lorenzo Barbo, CEO of Amazon Italia Logistics, emphasized Italy's crucial role in enhancing intermodal transport due to its strategic geographic location and strong Alpine connections. This expansion will further integrate Amazon’s European distribution network, optimizing logistics and embracing environmental stewardship.
Sabrina de Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics, stated that the initiative aligns perfectly with the European Union’s target for 30% of goods to be transported by rail by 2030. By partnering with FS and focusing on sustainable practices, Amazon is paving the way for a greener logistics industry.
