Shein's recent survey reveals that 80% of U.S. customers choose the platform for its unique items, and 79% appreciate its variety. Despite limited funds, 90% of respondents believe they should still be able to buy clothes that make them feel good, highlighting Shein’s appeal among budget-conscious shoppers.
In a recent survey commissioned by Shein, 80% of U.S. shoppers said they choose the platform primarily for its unique items. Conducted by The Harris Poll, the survey gathered data from over 2,000 U.S. adults between June 17 and June 25 and from August 6 to August 8, 2024. The survey highlighted that 69% of respondents valued unique items more, with 68% saying they would wear such items more frequently. Shein’s variety was also a major draw, with 79% of respondents noting that the platform's wide selection helps them find clothes that fit their style.
Shein has built its brand on providing fashionable options at low prices, making style accessible to a broader audience. According to the survey, 90% of respondents agreed that even when they don’t have a lot of money, they should still be able to buy clothes that make them feel good. George Chiao, president of Shein U.S., commented on this, stating, “Through [Shein’s] on-demand business model, we’ve been able to overcome this challenge. By only producing the products customers want, we’re able to reduce waste while offering a variety of products and keeping costs low.”
While Shein's low prices and trendy items have boosted its popularity, the company has faced scrutiny over its business practices. In 2023, Shein found two cases of child labor in its supply chain, a discovery that added to growing concerns about the ethical implications of its rapid production model. Additionally, the company has been involved in multiple copyright infringement lawsuits, with independent designers and other brands accusing Shein of copying their designs.
Despite these controversies, Shein continues to dominate the fast fashion market, with a strong customer base that values its unique offerings and affordability. The company’s ability to quickly respond to fashion trends while keeping costs low remains a key factor in its success. However, ongoing investigations and legal challenges could impact its future operations. As Shein navigates these issues, its commitment to providing accessible fashion will be crucial in maintaining customer loyalty.
How will Shein address the ethical concerns raised?
