Mercari, a Japanese resale marketplace, has launched its first physical store in the U.S., located on Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles. The store offers a curated selection of fashion items, including those from Japan, for shoppers to explore. In addition to browsing, visitors can participate in DIY classes and list items for sale. In a significant move, Mercari has opened its U.S. platform to sellers from Japan. Now, U.S. shoppers can access a wide array of rare items from Japanese sellers, including fashion, sneakers, toys, and collectibles. This launch marks the first time Mercari has connected its U.S. and Japanese marketplaces. Lagerling emphasized the growing interest in Japanese products and highlighted the favorable exchange rate, making it an excellent time for U.S. customers to shop directly from Japan.
Mercari has partnered with The Beenos Group to streamline the international shipping process for items purchased from Japan. When U.S. shoppers purchase items from Mercari x Japan, these products are first sent to The Beenos Group for inspection and preparation before being shipped to the buyer. This process ensures that items are delivered within approximately two weeks from the seller's shipping date. The entire transaction is handled in English, making it user-friendly for U.S. customers.
Founded in Japan in 2013, Mercari has rapidly expanded its footprint in the global resale market. After launching in the U.S. in 2014, Mercari now connects millions of buyers and sellers across the country. The opening of its LA store and the launch of Mercari x Japan represent a strategic effort to further integrate its U.S. and Japanese markets, offering a seamless global shopping experience. As Lagerling noted, cross-border shopping is a natural evolution for Mercari as it continues to grow as a global marketplace.
