Grubhub has deepened its partnership with Amazon Key, offering delivery partners one-click access to restricted residential buildings. This integration allows Grubhub drivers to enter common areas in Amazon Key-enabled properties, improving delivery efficiency. After a pilot in select markets in 2023, the service expanded nationwide in 2024. Amazon Key access has streamlined delivery processes, reducing the time spent coordinating with property managers.
Grubhub’s Amazon Key integration has had a significant impact on its operations. The company reported nearly 1 million deliveries using the service, reducing team calls by 50% and cutting order cancellations by 22%. Megan Mergener, Grubhub's senior director of logistics, emphasized that the streamlined access “has translated to smoother experiences for our customers,” with drivers completing deliveries faster and with fewer issues.
The service gives Grubhub delivery partners timed access to designated areas, but property managers retain full control. They can opt into the service, revoke access as needed, and review delivery partner history through Amazon Key’s dashboard. This balance ensures security while improving delivery efficiency, making the service appealing to residential managers.
Grubhub and Amazon’s partnership started in 2022, offering Amazon Prime members Grubhub+ memberships, valued at $120 annually. The latest integration builds on this, helping Grubhub to activate new customers through Amazon’s ecosystem. Just Eat Takeaway CEO Jitse Groen highlighted this during a July earnings call, saying, “It provides us with a far easier way to activate these customers.” Amazon also gained warrants for over 2% of Grubhub’s equity as part of their agreement, strengthening the alliance.
