12 organizations call for transparency in food delivery platforms’ algorithms. Concerns center on pay, data privacy, and workers’ rights.
Deliveroo, Just Eat, and Uber Eats face pressure to reveal how their algorithms affect gig workers. A letter signed by 12 organizations, including the TUC and Amnesty International, demands accountability. These algorithms dictate pay, task allocation, and account deactivations, often leaving workers without clarity or recourse. Privacy International calls it "algorithmic exploitation" and highlights the immense personal data workers must share to stay employed.
The letter proposes a three-step solution: maintain a public register of algorithms, provide explanations for algorithmic decisions, and allow independent testing. These changes aim to protect workers' rights and increase transparency. The EU’s upcoming Platform Workers’ directive and Spain’s Rider Law are pushing for similar reforms, pressuring companies to act before legal enforcement.
Deliveroo claims its riders receive information on algorithms during onboarding and can contact a Rider Support team for clarity. Just Eat says its couriers earn above the living wage and feedback is regularly collected through events. Uber emphasizes transparency, claiming to share platform details and maintain engagement with couriers. All three stress their commitment to fair practices.
The gig economy thrives on convenience, but workers often bear the cost. Algorithms can suspend accounts or reduce pay without clear explanations. Transparency could improve worker trust and safeguard livelihoods. The open letter warns that failing to act now will bring fines and stricter legislation. This is a critical moment for these companies to lead by example.
