Walmart’s InHome delivery is expanding to 45M U.S. homes, adding 10M potential customers. Since its 2019 launch, the service has grown steadily, now covering Southern California, Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia.
Walmart has announced the expansion of its InHome delivery service, adding 10 million more potential customers. This service will now cover markets including Southern California, Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia. Launched in 2019, InHome began as a pilot program in Pittsburgh and Vero Beach, Florida. The service uses specially trained delivery personnel who access homes via smart locks and record the entire delivery process via body cameras.
Haley McShane, General Manager of InHome at Walmart U.S., emphasized the convenience of the service. “We understand that customers are busy and want to ensure they have a seamless shopping experience that fits their needs,” she said. Industry analysts have mixed views, but some see in-home delivery as an untapped market with significant growth potential. Carson Krieg of Project44 highlighted that InHome appeals to a niche, yet highly loyal, audience. He noted, "While the audience likely to leverage the delivery service is niche, it is a high-value and loyal one."
Walmart is ranked No. 2 in the Top 1000 by Digital Commerce 360, highlighting its dominance in the online retail space. The expansion of InHome is seen as a strategic move to enhance customer loyalty and convenience. Krieg added that the service could also benefit elderly people or those with health conditions who find it difficult to handle groceries. “This is a smart way to create a new subset of loyal customers,” Krieg explained. He also predicted that other retailers might emulate Walmart’s approach to retain their market share.
As Walmart continues to expand InHome, it sets a precedent for other retailers in the grocery segment. The service’s growth since its inception shows the potential of innovative delivery solutions in driving customer satisfaction and loyalty. By reaching 45 million U.S. homes, Walmart is not only making shopping more convenient but also setting a benchmark in the retail industry. The company’s strategic moves and technological advancements are likely to shape the future of in-home delivery services.
