Lou Haverty, an e-commerce seller, says only 15-20% of his customers use PayPal. The rest prefer faster, seamless options like Shop Pay.
Apple Pay and Shop Pay offer frictionless, one-click payments. Apple Pay integrates directly with devices, making checkout seamless. Shopify’s Shop Pay is optimized for e-commerce, requiring fewer clicks. Brian Lim, founder of iHeartRaves, says speed and ease are everything. “PayPal feels like an extra step,” he says. Consumers want fast, integrated payments, and PayPal is falling behind.
PayPal's reputation is strong, but user expectations have evolved. Lim says PayPal must improve native integrations and speed up authentication. Biometric logins and seamless mobile payments are now standard. Market trends favor non-intrusive payments like one-click and voice-commanded transactions. Without an upgrade, PayPal risks becoming a relic of the past.
PayPal has the resources to fight back, but time is running out. Investors want to see innovations in checkout speed and mobile usability. Lim suggests rewards for loyal users and better integration with mobile commerce. If PayPal adapts, it could regain market share. If not, Apple and Shopify will continue to eat its lunch. The battle for online checkout is heating up, and PayPal must move fast.
