Ocado Retail buys Getir's customer email database following Getir's UK exit. Zoom by Ocado offers former Getir users 25% off their first order and Gorillas customers 30% off their first shop and three months of free deliveries.
Ocado Retail, a joint venture between Marks and Spencer Group PLC and Ocado Group PLC, has signed a deal to acquire the customer email database from Getir. Getir, a Turkey-based delivery service group, exited the UK market last month to cut costs due to spiraling losses and funding concerns. The deal allows Ocado to reach former Getir customers and offer them promotions for its own fast-paced delivery service, Zoom by Ocado.
Customers who used Getir received emails from Ocado Retail, inviting them to try Zoom by Ocado. These emails highlighted Zoom's benefits, stating it offers "the same smart shopping experience" with "five times the choice" and "the best of M&S". To attract these new users, Ocado is offering a 25% discount on their first order. Former Gorillas customers, a sister brand of Getir, are being offered a 30% discount on their first shop and three months of free deliveries.
Gemma McIver, head of Zoom at Ocado Retail, expressed optimism about the deal. She said, "As Getir and Gorillas exit the UK, we're pleased to be offering their customers a chance to try Zoom by Ocado. With a huge range of products, including M&S food, delivered in less than 60 minutes, we’re confident they’ll love the service." This move is seen as a strategic effort by Ocado to increase its market share and customer base in the UK.
Despite the positive news, Ocado Retail is currently embroiled in a dispute between its two owners over a bonus Ocado Group believes it deserves. Marks and Spencer Group PLC disagrees and has refused to pay the bonus, leading Ocado to threaten legal action. On Wednesday, M&S boss Stuart Machin doubled down on the company's decision, maintaining that the bonus should not be paid. The outcome of this dispute remains to be seen.
Will Ocado's move help it dominate the UK market?
