Jumia completed the sale of 20.2M shares, raising $99.6M. The funds will bolster its $92.8M cash position. The e-commerce giant aims to accelerate growth and move towards profitability as it continues to expand its customer base in Africa.
Jumia, Africa's leading e-commerce platform, has successfully completed the sale of 20.2M American Depositary Shares (ADSs). The shares were sold at an average price of $4.92 per ADS, raising $99.6M. This was slightly below the anticipated $5.70 per ADS, but still represents a significant capital boost for the company. The transaction took place over almost two weeks, with the aim of strengthening Jumia's financial position and supporting its growth strategy.
Before the sale, Jumia's cash position was at $92.8M, a decrease from $120.6M in Q4 2023 and $101.5M in Q1 2024. With the additional $99.6M from the share sale, Jumia’s financial outlook has improved, providing the company with more resources to invest in its operations. The sale was the first major move by CEO Francis Dufay, who emphasized that the funds will help "accelerate our growth trajectory as we progress along our path to profitability."
Jumia's growth potential remains significant, with only 2M active quarterly customers in markets with over 600M people. The company saw a 6.0% increase in active customers from Q1 2024 to Q2 2024. Dufay noted, "Our customer base is still relatively small...so we can do much more on the customer base." Jumia's strategy includes expanding its customer reach and increasing market penetration across Africa's diverse and growing markets.
Between 2020 and 2021, Jumia raised nearly $600M by selling secondary shares, taking advantage of favorable market conditions. The recent $99.6M sale continues this trend, albeit in a more challenging financial environment. The capital raised in these efforts has been crucial for sustaining Jumia's operations and funding its expansion efforts across the continent. This latest round of fundraising underscores the ongoing investor interest in Jumia’s long-term growth prospects in Africa.
