Amazon has launched its Free Same-Day Delivery service in Sydney, covering 90% of the city's population. Prime members can now get over a million items delivered on the same day if ordered by noon. The service is available on orders over A$49.
Amazon Australia has launched a Free Same-Day Delivery service in Sydney, the first city in Australia to offer this. The service covers over 90% of the city's population, making it a significant move in Australia's e-commerce landscape. Orders placed by midday are delivered by 10 pm the same day. The service is available for eligible orders over A$49. Janet Menzies, Country Manager for Amazon Australia, stated, "Faster online delivery times have provided nearly $350M of value to Australian consumers over the past decade." This initiative is set to further enhance customer convenience.
Amazon has made over a million products eligible for same-day delivery, ranging from essentials to electronics. These products are marked with ‘Today by 10pm’ or the ‘Prime Same-Day’ badge. To promote the service, Amazon has appointed cricketer Mitch Starc as its “Chief Speed Officer.” Starc will make special deliveries to select customers in Sydney. To participate, customers need to share a cricket chant on Amazon Australia’s Instagram, showcasing why they deserve a delivery from Starc himself.
While Sydney is the first city to experience this service, Amazon Australia has hinted at expanding it to other cities soon. Although specific plans and timelines remain undisclosed, the company has committed to expanding product selection and delivery areas. Earlier this year, Amazon extended its Prime one-day delivery service to Brisbane, Geelong, Newcastle, and other regional centres, showing its ongoing efforts to improve delivery speed across Australia.
Amazon's investment in Australia has been substantial, with more than $15B already invested in its operations. The company plans to spend another $1.6B on five new fulfilment centres by 2026, which will be located across NSW, Victoria, and Queensland, creating 4500 new jobs. A new fulfilment centre in Craigieburn, Melbourne, is expected to be completed by next year. These investments are crucial in supporting Amazon's rapid delivery services, contributing to its growing customer base, which increased by 1.1M over the past year, reaching 7.9M annual shoppers in Australia.
