TikTok is taking legal action against the US government, claiming that a law demanding its sale by January 2025 unfairly targets the platform and threatens to disconnect over 1 billion global users.
TikTok, owned by ByteDance, has filed a lawsuit against the US, calling a recent law that requires them to divest unconstitutional. The law states that if ByteDance does not sell TikTok by January 2025, the app will be banned in the US.
The lawsuit argues that the US has not shown evidence of Chinese government misuse. TikTok says the ban is unfeasible technically, as it would involve moving millions of lines of code. It could also prevent the sale of TikTok with its crucial algorithm due to Chinese regulations.
Despite the looming US ban, TikTok's reach remains strong globally, with over 1 billion users. The platform claims the ban would isolate American users from this vast community, offering a "detached experience."
Meanwhile, ByteDance's Lemon8 app sees rising popularity in the US, topping lifestyle app downloads on Apple's store since April 7. ByteDance is also promoting Lemon8 through TikTok influencers in the US as an alternative.
