TikTok Shop has launched in Spain, its first continental European market. With 20M monthly users, Spaniards can now shop directly in-app. This move follows TikTok’s $100M Black Friday success and precedes a potential U.S. ban.
TikTok Shop has officially launched in Spain, marking its first venture into continental Europe. The app, which boasts 20M active Spanish users, now allows them to shop through videos and live-streams. TikTok first introduced Shop in the UK in 2021 and later expanded to eight countries, including the U.S. and Indonesia. The launch is part of ByteDance's European growth strategy, which was previously delayed to focus on the U.S. market.
Spain’s TikTok Shop launch comes alongside Ireland’s, with 2.2M Irish users gaining access this week. Spanish merchants will initially join by invitation, with open registration starting February 2025. This cautious roll-out mirrors TikTok’s approach in other regions. ByteDance plans to use Europe’s growing e-commerce potential to offset challenges in the U.S. and aims to dominate the social shopping space globally.
TikTok’s focus on e-commerce stems from its record-breaking Black Friday performance in the U.S. TikTok Shop achieved over $100M in sales in one day, a threefold increase from 2023. This success underscores the platform’s ability to rival Amazon and Shein by leveraging viral content and creator-led promotions. ByteDance aims to replicate this success in Spain and beyond.
The European push comes as TikTok battles a potential U.S. ban due to national security concerns. ByteDance has filed an emergency motion to block the law, which demands TikTok divest its American operations by January 19, 2025. Analysts remain skeptical of a Supreme Court reversal. As tensions rise, TikTok is doubling down on expanding globally, starting with Europe.
