A High Court ruling allows Lidl to open its first-ever pub inside its Dundonald store near Belfast, replacing two former pubs. The retailer plans to invest £410K in the project.
Lidl has won a court battle to open a pub in its Dundonald store. The ruling, made on 27 January, dismissed an appeal from Philip Russell Ltd. The company argued Lidl had not shown a lack of local pubs. The judge disagreed, citing two closures in the area.
The pub will seat 45 people and include an off-licence. Lidl is investing £410K to bring the plan to life. The location is central, near transport and shopping facilities. The judge said it meets all licencing laws and fills a market gap.
Northern Ireland law requires a pub licence to be transferred, not newly granted. Lidl argued the area needed more options. The court agreed, ruling the new pub would serve a growing adult population.
Retailers adding pubs is unusual, but Lidl is betting on it. The mix of grocery shopping and a drink could attract more customers. If it works in Dundonald, expect more Lidl pubs in the future.
