eBay's new trial enables sellers to easily download VAT invoices. Buyers get better access to VAT receipts, reducing seller workload.
eBay is introducing a new trial that allows sellers to download VAT invoices directly from their accounts. This trial aims to make it easier for sellers to maintain accounting records and reduce the volume of invoice requests from buyers. Starting January 27, 2025, sellers can opt-in by completing an online form. The goal is to streamline the invoicing process for all parties involved.
Once sellers enroll, eBay generates VAT invoices on their behalf. Both buyers and sellers can access and download invoices from the 'View order details' page for up to 18 months after a purchase. eBay ensures compliance by using sequential numbering in line with UK VAT requirements. However, this could lead to duplicate invoices if sellers also generate their own records.
eBay advises sellers to check for duplicate invoices, which could affect VAT accounting. If duplicates occur, sellers are responsible for canceling their own invoices to avoid issues. During this trial, eBay will only allow cancellation of its invoices in cases of returns or credits. Sellers need to act carefully to avoid any VAT complications.
To participate, sellers must request enrollment and wait for eBay's confirmation, which takes about 72 hours. eBay's generated VAT invoices will start from the point of enrollment and cover all transactions. This initiative is currently by request only, and eBay plans to expand it based on user feedback.
