Temu’s U.S. Seller Program, launched in Feb 2024, offers DTC brands access to 185M global users. With fees as low as 2%, it’s a low-cost opportunity for marketing, revenue growth, and even expansion into Chinese markets.
In February 2024, Temu, a rapidly growing Chinese marketplace, launched its U.S. Seller Program. This initiative gives U.S. brands access to an audience of 185M global monthly shoppers. The program allows sellers to list products for free with a subscription fee of 2–5% per sale. Additional fees include 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction for payment processing and shipping costs, comparable to other marketplaces. Sellers can use Temu's warehouse system, making it easier for smaller businesses to scale globally.
Temu’s low prices may not attract traditional retailers, but DTC brands stand to gain. American-made products, perceived as higher quality, could thrive. Temu helps DTC sellers build their brand, using packaging to share their story or incentives. The platform offers participation in flash sales and promotions, driving visibility. Furthermore, listing fees are absent, enabling cost-effective testing of new products and prototypes, which can provide valuable consumer feedback.
Temu isn’t just a gateway to American customers—it’s also an opportunity to reach Chinese buyers. U.S. DTC brands can store inventory in Hong Kong or other Temu locations to serve these markets. With the platform’s growing presence, this could pave the way for American brands to tap into China’s immense e-commerce market, flipping the script and becoming exporters.
Temu fits into a larger marketplace strategy for DTC sellers. By leveraging multiple platforms like Amazon, Etsy, and Walmart, brands can diversify revenue and meet distinct customer needs. For instance, premium products may work on Amazon, while entry-level versions sell on Temu. Optimizing product listings, aligning items to platform-specific audiences, and setting clear objectives—such as revenue or customer acquisition—can enhance results. Temu’s U.S. Seller Program represents an affordable and expansive tool in this strategy.
