A new polyester recycling plant launches in June 2025, with 3,000 tons of capacity, and $5.3M is pledged to Kenya’s textile recycling efforts.
SHEIN has taken a bold step toward sustainability by developing an innovative polyester recycling process in partnership with Donghua University. This cutting-edge method uses textile waste and PET bottles, breaking them down chemically and rebuilding them at the molecular level. Unlike traditional recycling, this process maintains high material quality even after multiple cycles, offering a cost-efficient and sustainable alternative to virgin polyester.
Large-scale production of recycled polyester will begin in June 2025. SHEIN plans to produce 3,000 tons annually at a specialized facility, aiming to reduce its reliance on virgin polyester. Leonard Lin, President of EMEA, noted, “This is a crucial step in tackling the industry’s environmental challenges and increasing recycled materials in our products.” By 2030, SHEIN aims to make 31% of its materials recycled polyester, driven by its sustainability-focused "evoluSHEIN" strategy.
SHEIN’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its production processes. The company launched the Shein Foundation, investing $5.3M in the Africa Collect Textiles (ACT) Foundation. This initiative will enhance textile recycling infrastructure in Kenya, including creating drop-off points for used clothing, recycling facilities, and new jobs. ACT Foundation Director Elmar Stroomer highlighted the impact, saying, “This project helps protect our planet while creating opportunities for underserved communities.”
SHEIN’s efforts to reduce textile waste and innovate sustainable solutions have been supported by $26M in philanthropic investments between 2021-2024. However, the company faces challenges over transparency in its supply chain and labor practices. As SHEIN advances these initiatives, it must address growing scrutiny to show that these sustainability projects are genuine and impactful, not just surface-level fixes for a fast-fashion giant.
Can SHEIN’s recycling initiatives shift perceptions of fast fashion?
