Fast Retailing's GU launched its first USA store in New York's SoHo, marking its expansion beyond Asia. The 950 sqm store offers trendy, affordable items. GU also unveiled a collaboration with Japanese brand Undercover & launched online shop + app for the US market.
Fast Retailing's GU, a sister brand to Uniqlo, opened its first store in the USA on September 19, 2024. The flagship store is located in New York City's SoHo district. This is GU's first store outside of Asia, occupying a 950-square-meter space over two floors. The store will focus on offering trendy, affordable clothing. Fast Retailing, which owns both Uniqlo and GU, is expanding its reach in the Western market, aiming to replicate the success of Uniqlo in the USA.
To celebrate the launch, GU introduced a special collaboration with the Japanese fashion brand Undercover. The collection, titled Kosmik/Noise, includes 22 unisex styles like track jackets, stadium sweaters, and logo tops. Exclusive items, such as t-shirts with 'Big Apple' graphics and ripstop bags, were also introduced, emphasizing a blend of fashion and functionality. This collection will debut in the US before launching in other markets.
Alongside the physical store opening, GU launched an online store and a mobile app for the US market. This move ensures that customers across the USA can access GU's collections and collaborations from anywhere. The online platform is expected to play a significant role in GU's strategy to grow its presence in the USA, supporting both brick-and-mortar and digital retail channels.
GU, founded in 2006, has been rapidly expanding after witnessing Uniqlo's global success. By the end of May 2024, GU operated 476 stores, primarily in Japan, with others in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and now the USA. The brand's entry into the US market is a strategic move as it plans to establish a foothold not only in the USA but also in Europe. Fast Retailing aims to strengthen GU's global presence and capitalize on the growing demand for affordable, stylish clothing worldwide.
