Swedish outdoor brand Fjällräven has rolled out a peer-to-peer resale platform in the U.S. The platform, named Fjällräven Pre-Loved, is powered by resale tech company Archive. It allows customers to buy and sell used Fjällräven bags, gear, and apparel. Customers can choose to receive either cash or credit towards a new Fjällräven purchase. The brand will recommend listing prices and provide pre-paid USPS shipping labels for sellers to use.
Fjällräven’s resale initiative aligns with its mission to reduce waste and promote circularity. In 2023, the company repaired 8,531 items, more than double the 3,556 repairs in 2021. CEO of the Americas, Nathan Dopp, stated, "Our commitment to sustainability is not just about minimizing our impact today but ensuring that our products continue to serve a purpose for generations to come." This platform is a natural extension of the brand’s focus on durability and sustainability.
The U.S. resale market has been growing rapidly. In 2023, it reached $43B, up from $23B in 2018. This growth is expected to continue, with projections hitting $73B by 2028, according to a ThredUp report. The demand for used goods is high, with 90% of consumers having bought or sold used items in the past year, according to eBay’s 2024 Recommerce Report. Fjällräven’s move into this space follows other retailers like Urban Outfitters and New Balance.
