Amazon is transforming how it delivers packages in the UK. Using electric cargo bikes and on-foot deliveries, Amazon is making over a million deliveries in cities like London, Manchester, Glasgow, and Belfast. This is part of Amazon's broader commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint. "Millions of Amazon packages have already been delivered by electric cargo bikes across some of the UK’s biggest cities," an Amazon spokesperson said.
🚲 Micromobility Hubs Across the UK
Amazon's micromobility hubs are central to this green initiative. These hubs, located in urban areas, sort packages for the final delivery leg, which is often done on electric cargo bikes or on foot. The UK hubs are part of a €1 billion European investment aimed at electrifying and decarbonizing Amazon's transport network. With £300 million dedicated to the UK, the goal is to improve air quality and reduce congestion. These hubs are operational in more than 40 cities across Europe, including Manchester, London, Glasgow, and Belfast.
🌍 Investments in Sustainable Infrastructure
Amazon's sustainability efforts extend beyond micromobility hubs. The company is also the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally, with significant projects in the UK. This includes 29 operational on-site solar projects and seven large-scale offsite renewable energy projects. These initiatives aim to generate enough energy to power over one million UK homes annually. Additionally, Amazon has invested in public charging infrastructure to support electric vehicles across Europe.
🔋 Future Goals and Commitments
Looking ahead, Amazon plans to have 100,000 electric delivery vehicles in service worldwide by 2030. This is expected to save millions of metric tons of carbon each year. In 2023, Amazon launched an open-source tool to identify priority locations for building electric charging points for heavy goods vehicles. This tool will accelerate the industry's shift towards sustainable transportation. Currently, there are around 1,000 Amazon electric delivery vans and nine fully-electric heavy goods vehicles operating in the UK, replacing traditional diesel trucks.
