Uber opens its platform nationwide to all German taxi companies, facilitating additional orders easily and transparently. This new strategy promises additional income for taxi drivers without membership fees or long-term contracts.
On June 12, 2024, Uber announced a significant shift in its strategy. The company now opens its platform to all taxi operators in Germany. Previously, Uber rides were available only in 16 cities. This change means that taxi drivers and car rental companies across the country can now be mediated by Uber. Uber promises additional income sources without monthly fees or long-term contracts. This move is aimed at increasing utilization and revenues for taxi operators.
In cities like Berlin and Munich, Uber already allows taxis to be booked through its app. Christoph Weigler, Uber Germany's head, said, "By opening the app to all taxi drivers nationwide, we show our commitment to being a partner to the taxi industry in Germany." According to Uber, 20% of all taxis in Berlin already cooperate with their platform. Nationwide, over 4,000 taxi drivers are now part of this initiative.
Uber emphasized its collaboration with local, licensed taxi and rental car companies. All drivers have a passenger transport license and meet the requirements for commercial passenger transportation. Uber stated, "All rides are fully insured." This assurance aims to build trust among taxi operators and customers, ensuring safety and reliability in their service.
Weigler highlighted the advantages of digitalization for the taxi industry. He said, "With the Uber app, we offer a technological solution and provide taxi drivers with additional jobs simply and transparently." Booking services digitally has become the norm, and Uber aims to leverage its app's popularity to benefit taxi drivers. This new offer competes directly with traditional taxi dispatch centers, pushing for a more modern approach to ride-hailing.
