Taobao’s AI-powered English version hit Singapore on Sept. 10, boosting it to the top of Apple’s App Store. The app caters to non-Chinese users, with AI translations improving access, despite some flaws in currency display.
On Sept. 10, Alibaba's Taobao app launched its AI-powered English version in Singapore, shooting to the top of the Apple App Store. Market research firm Sensor Tower reported that the app reached #1 across all categories on Sept. 11. This update addresses non-Chinese users' needs, making the platform more accessible. Taobao's popularity was already strong, with consistent top-10 rankings in Singapore’s shopping apps, but this release significantly boosted its visibility.
In addition to Singapore, Taobao’s English version is also available in Malaysia. Both countries are key markets due to their large Chinese-speaking populations and proximity to China. Alibaba is using Singapore as a testbed for its global expansion, reflecting a trend where Chinese firms experiment in Southeast Asia before targeting Western markets. According to Bain & Company, this strategy helps Chinese companies leverage the Chinese diaspora to expand abroad.
While the AI-powered update improves accessibility, the experience isn't perfect. Some users reported that price conversions from Chinese yuan to Singapore dollars weren’t working correctly. Additionally, product translations are often too literal, which causes confusion. Social media users have been quick to point out these issues, with videos showing how to navigate the English interface gaining attention. One TikTok video garnered 947,000 views within 24 hours of the release.
Taobao and Tmall generated $3.65B in revenue in Q2 2024, a 6% year-over-year growth. This launch fits into Alibaba's wider global strategy, as the company aims to diversify beyond the Chinese market through platforms like AliExpress. Alibaba’s expansion strategy aligns with other Chinese companies that are leveraging Southeast Asia’s market as a springboard. Bain & Company's David Zehner noted, "Chinese companies have a unique ability to innovate quickly and take these innovations overseas." This momentum is likely to continue, despite minor issues with the launch.
