Shopify's method involves leveraging its engineering prowess to create market forces that drive the demand for carbon removal – a critical yet underfunded solution to the climate crisis. Through its Planet app, Shopify offers merchants the ability to provide their customers with carbon-neutral shipping options. These aren't just any carbon offsets; they're investments in cutting-edge carbon removal technologies. Since 2022, this initiative has neutralized shipping emissions for over 25 million orders and removed 23,000 tons of carbon from the atmosphere.
The Planet app estimates shipping emissions based on factors such as delivery distance, transportation method, and product weight. Merchants can then choose a subscription plan, contributing between 3.5 to 15 cents per order towards carbon removal. A recent feature introduced in January 2024 also allows customers to chip in an additional 25 cents to their order to further support carbon removal projects. This collaborative effort funds technologies like direct air capture, ocean carbon removal, and soil carbon storage, among others.
Shopify's approach to sustainable commerce isn't just about corporate responsibility; it's about creating a community of conscious consumers and merchants. Over half of consumers (54%) report shopping sustainably, and 43% are more likely to buy from brands that are committed to sustainability.
