Photon Health, founded in 2021, is challenging the $700B U.S. prescription drug industry. The startup allows patients to shop for prescriptions like they shop online. With over 70K monthly prescriptions, they've raised $16M to take on industry giants.
Photon Health, founded in 2021 by Otto Sipe in Brooklyn, is aiming to transform how patients shop for prescription drugs. The startup's mission is to make comparing prescription drug prices as easy as shopping on Amazon. With a $700B industry at stake, Photon Health offers e-prescribing software that empowers patients to control their prescriptions, allowing them to choose pharmacies based on price, availability, and convenience.
Photon Health faces a significant hurdle known as the "cold-start phenomenon." To gain traction, they've started by selling their software to virtual health providers like Sesame and Summer Health. Patients receive prescriptions via text, which they can fill at their pharmacy of choice. With more than 70,000 prescriptions processed each month, Photon is gradually building a user base and preparing to expand its services to include controlled substances by 2025.
Photon Health's innovative approach has attracted significant investor interest. Notation Capital and Flare Capital Partners led a $9M funding round, bringing the total raised to over $16M. Investors are betting on Photon’s potential to disrupt the market, with Nick Chirls from Notation Capital emphasizing the power shift towards patients in managing their prescriptions and making informed choices, much like in other areas of e-commerce.
Photon Health is directly challenging Surescripts, a monopoly that dominates the e-prescribing software market with a 95% share. Surescripts has been accused of maintaining its monopoly through anticompetitive practices, leading to an FTC lawsuit in 2019. Despite the risks, Sipe believes that growing consumer demand for a better prescription experience will give Photon the leverage it needs to succeed where others have failed.
Will Photon Health break the monopoly on e-prescribing?
