Ukraine’s Minister of Economy canceled a directive exempting employees of six companies, including Glovo and Favbet, from military mobilization. The directive was questioned for its fairness. The debate highlighted tensions between national security and economic stability.
Ukraine's Minister of Economy, Yuliia Svyrydenko, canceled a directive that allowed employees of six companies to be exempt from mobilization for six months. The cancellation came after MP Oleksandr Fedienko disclosed the names of these companies. Svyrydenko hinted that there might have been a mistake by the Ministry of Digital Transformation in adding these companies to the list.
The affected companies include Glovo, Favbet Tech, Visa, AgriChain, Kort, and Publicis Groupe. These companies initially received deferments for critical employees according to Ukrainian law. Fedienko, a member of the Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence, criticized the selections, especially highlighting the inclusion of betting companies like Favbet.
The decision has sparked intense discussions in Ukraine. In a public post, Svyrydenko emphasized that while deferring specialists is a legitimate business right, it shouldn't divide society. Companies like Glovo and Favbet have used the deferment to keep essential staff. Glovo exempted 10 out of 108 IT employees, while Favbet exempted 15 employees. The criteria for exemption, which include tax contributions and revenue thresholds, were under scrutiny.
The debate highlights the challenge Ukraine faces in balancing national security needs with economic stability. The business community, especially in the IT sector, argues for more exemptions, noting that many IT specialists are already contributing to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The criteria for deferment are being reconsidered to ensure fairness and support for critical industries while maintaining the necessary military strength.
Should the government allow more exemptions for critical business employees?
