German retailer Kaufland's e-truck project has cut 500 tonnes of CO2 emissions since 2023. It includes ten 40-tonne electric trucks covering 560,000 km annually.
German retailer Kaufland has cut 500 tonnes of CO2 emissions through its e-truck project, a key step toward greener logistics. In 2023, it launched its first e-charging park in Möckmühl, featuring eight DC charging stations. These stations support ten 40-tonne electric trucks that now deliver goods to 12 branches daily. By collaborating with Swedish tech firm Einride, Kaufland reinforces its commitment to sustainable innovation. The initiative also aligns with its parent company, Schwarz Group's net-zero vision for 2050.
Starting with eight e-trucks, Kaufland expanded its fleet with two additional electric trucks operated by third-party freight forwarders. These trucks cover southwestern Germany, clocking 560,000 km electrically since the project began. With over 8,200 trips, they have revolutionized regional logistics while reducing emissions. The retailer plans to expand partnerships to optimize return trips by collecting goods from supplier locations. Kaufland’s meat plants in Heilbronn are also integrated into this eco-friendly network.
Pascal Siegmund, Kaufland’s head of international transport logistics, highlighted the project's dual focus on economic viability and ecological responsibility. He stated, “This milestone encourages us to deepen our environmental efforts.” By integrating sustainability into its operations, Kaufland sets a benchmark for retail logistics. It joins Lidl in its ambitious plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, covering Scope 3 emissions, including supply chain operations.
Kaufland’s strategy includes scaling its electric fleet and forging new supplier collaborations. These steps reflect its commitment to sustainable logistics. The Möckmühl hub serves as a model for other regions, demonstrating how large retailers can integrate green solutions without compromising efficiency. As climate-conscious shoppers increasingly favor eco-friendly brands, Kaufland’s efforts are both timely and essential for long-term competitiveness in the retail industry.
