Two CPSC commissioners are calling for a probe into e-commerce giants Shein and Temu. They want to examine their safety practices, particularly after reports of dangerous baby and toddler items. Both companies say they prioritize safety.
Shein and Temu have seen massive success in the U.S. market, offering ultra-cheap products like clothing, electronics, and home goods. Shein entered the U.S. in 2017 and is now valued at $66B. Temu, owned by PDD Holdings, debuted in 2022, quickly gaining attention through aggressive marketing, such as its Super Bowl ad. Temu and Shein ship directly from China to U.S. customers using a trade loophole, the de minimis exemption, which allows packages under $800 to avoid tariffs.
Recently, serious safety concerns have been raised. Last month, Temu was found selling banned padded crib bumpers, while Shein sold children’s hoodies with dangerous drawstrings. The CPSC commissioners are concerned about the companies' focus on low-cost, direct-to-consumer shipments and are pushing for an investigation into their safety protocols. The commissioners want to understand how Shein and Temu ensure product safety, especially with their third-party sellers.
Both Shein and Temu have responded to the concerns. A Shein spokesperson stated, “Customer safety is a top priority,” highlighting millions spent on compliance programs and partnerships with testing agencies. Temu also emphasized its commitment to consumer safety and cooperation with the CPSC, stating that it requires all sellers to comply with laws and regulations. Both companies face increasing scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers and regulatory agencies.
Lawmakers are also growing concerned about Shein and Temu. In April 2023, a congressional commission released a report on Chinese fast-fashion platforms, calling out safety hazards, forced labor allegations, and exploitation of trade loopholes. CPSC has been asking for additional funding to monitor platforms like Shein and Temu. As both companies continue to expand, the scrutiny around their safety practices and compliance with U.S. laws is expected to intensify.
