Alibaba and South Korea’s E-Mart will form a $4B joint venture in 2025 by merging AliExpress Korea and Gmarket platforms, enhancing global eCommerce services.
Alibaba and South Korean retailer E-Mart are launching a $4B joint eCommerce venture in 2025. The two companies plan to merge AliExpress Korea and Gmarket. This 50-50 partnership was confirmed through a regulatory filing by E-Mart’s parent, Shinsegae Group. The joint venture will enable both platforms to operate independently while benefiting from shared resources. Shinsegae Group expects this collaboration to improve Gmarket’s services and strengthen its competitive edge in the growing global eCommerce market.
This move follows Alibaba’s recent reorganization of its domestic and international eCommerce units. CEO Eddie Wu highlighted the importance of global supply chain and consumer service capabilities in shaping future competition. By combining Taobao, Tmall, and AIDC under one umbrella, Alibaba aims to streamline operations and enhance its global reach. The $4B venture with E-Mart is part of this broader strategy, emphasizing cross-border synergies.
E-Mart’s parent Shinsegae Group views the partnership as a way to amplify Gmarket’s offerings. This includes improving customer experience and operational efficiency. AliExpress Korea brings robust logistics and international expertise to the table, complementing Gmarket’s strong local market presence. Both platforms aim to attract a wider customer base by providing seamless online shopping experiences.
As the eCommerce industry evolves, payment systems remain a focal point. Mike Hanson of Quantum Metric emphasized that optimized checkout experiences drive conversions and loyalty. This aligns with the venture’s goals to modernize and improve user experience. Retailers who prioritize frictionless, secure payment systems will likely thrive in the highly competitive digital marketplace.
