Alibaba has launched operations in Morocco, its first site in Africa. The goal is to help Moroccan firms expand exports to North America via its platform.
Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant, launched its first African site in Morocco this December. The expansion aims to connect Moroccan exporters with global markets, especially North America. A meeting in Casablanca marked the announcement, attended by Moroccan businesses and trade officials. Alibaba’s Europe Director, Giancarlo Pastano, emphasized Morocco’s strategic location and advanced infrastructure like Tanger Med Port as key reasons for the move. Currently, fewer than 30 Moroccan businesses use the platform, but this is expected to grow significantly.
Alibaba plans to create a dedicated page for Moroccan products, increasing their visibility to millions of buyers. The company also aims to help Moroccan exporters diversify away from their heavy reliance on the EU. Clementia, a local partner, will assist businesses in creating digital storefronts. Reda Chraibi, Clementia's CEO, said these storefronts will simplify access to global buyers. This initiative could significantly raise Morocco's profile in international trade.
Morocco offers Alibaba a mix of opportunity and infrastructure. The country has diverse, high-quality products sought by global markets, including textiles, food products, and crafts. Its location provides direct shipping access to Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Tanger Med Port, the top Mediterranean container hub, plays a central role. According to Pastano, this makes Morocco a strong choice for Alibaba’s African entry point.
Morocco’s partnership with Alibaba could transform its export landscape. With 47M active users on Alibaba, Moroccan products could reach far beyond their traditional markets. Collaboration between Alibaba and Moroccan trade agencies will determine the success of initiatives like the dedicated product page. If successful, this venture could inspire similar models in other African countries. The potential to revolutionize B2B trade in Africa has just begun.
