Following Amazon's step back from "Just Walk Out" tech, Aldi and Grabango test the Aldigo system in Aurora, IL. Cameras and AI monitor shopping without changing store layout, marking a significant shift in grocery shopping.
Recently, Aldi teamed up with tech company Grabango to introduce a revolutionary checkout-free experience, named Aldigo, at their Aurora, Illinois location. This move comes shortly after Amazon decided to phase out its similar technology, focusing instead on their AI shopping carts.
Shoppers can utilize the Grabango app to add items to their basket, scan a QR code via the app to checkout, and automatically charge the total to their online account. This seamless process is supported by sophisticated cameras and AI that accurately track picked items, providing a hassle-free shopping experience.
"Although more challenging, it was important to us to launch this technology in a typical store and not one purpose-built for us," commented Grabango CEO Will Glaser. The store’s layout and product displays remain unchanged, showcasing the adaptability of Aldigo to existing retail environments.
The implementation of Aldigo not only underscores Aldi's commitment to innovation but also sets a new standard for the grocery industry. As the first full-sized grocer to adopt such tech, Aldi could inspire more widespread adoption of AI-driven shopping solutions across the market.
