Shopsense AI teamed up with Paramount at the 2024 VMAs to let viewers shop for affordable dupes of their favorite artists' outfits. The AI can identify similar items from over 1,000 retailers, offering both style and budget options.
At the 2024 VMAs, Shopsense AI allowed fans to shop dupes of the most stylish outfits in real-time. Viewers could upload photos of their favorite looks via shop.mtvvmas.com. The AI would suggest similar options, including high-end items like a $500 AllSaints dress or budget-friendly alternatives like Boohoo's $56 milkmaid dress. Shopsense AI’s tool taps into a database of 1 billion items from retailers like Macy’s and Urban Outfitters.
Shopsense AI uses computer vision technology to identify fashion pieces in live TV shows. The system matches those looks to a vast online catalog, offering users comparable alternatives. Some issues persist, like the AI confusing colors or accessories, but Bryan Quinn, co-founder of Shopsense AI, explains that improvements are ongoing. “We continue to develop the technology,” he said, citing TV frame rates and zoom as challenges. Shopsense has benchmarked its tool against top AI models.
Paramount first revealed its partnership with Shopsense AI in April at its Upfronts. The 2024 VMAs were the latest example of how media giants are embracing shoppable TV content. Companies like Disney and Peacock are rolling out similar technology. Shopsense AI stands out by offering a cost-effective model, according to Quinn. It earns revenue through cost-per-click (CPC) and revenue-sharing models when users buy items via partner platforms.
Shopsense AI is expanding beyond fashion. Glenn Fishback, co-founder, said, “It’s not all about the drip.” The tech will soon recommend other products like travel destinations, sporting gear, and more. The company also plans to roll out its shopping platform across Paramount’s sports, scripted, and reality shows, turning everything from live sports to reality TV into shoppable experiences. The vision is to make all Paramount content interactive, enhancing both viewer experience and revenue.
