Feds are investigating HelloFresh’s Aurora facility and Midway Staffing over child labor claims. HelloFresh terminated Midway and denied wrongdoing. Midway also denies hiring minors. The case involves Factor, acquired by HelloFresh in 2020.
The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) is investigating allegations of child labor at an Aurora, Illinois, facility operated by Factor, a company owned by meal-kit giant HelloFresh. Factor was acquired in 2020 as part of HelloFresh's expansion into meal delivery. The investigation also involves Midway Staffing LLC, which provided temporary workers to the facility. Reports claim minors were employed at the site. The DOL opened its Fair Labor Standards Act audit in May 2024, but no details about violations have been disclosed yet.
HelloFresh, headquartered in Berlin, Germany, said it was "deeply troubled" by the allegations. The company immediately terminated its relationship with Midway Staffing upon learning of the claims. A HelloFresh spokesperson emphasized that neither HelloFresh nor Factor directly employed the alleged underage workers. The company reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward child labor and noted its strict global ethics and compliance protocols. Factor’s Aurora facility is a key part of HelloFresh's U.S. operations, where it expanded its footprint after acquiring the Chicago-based Factor75 in 2020.
Midway Staffing released a statement denying all allegations of hiring minors. The company said it has cooperated fully with the DOL’s audit and provided payroll, timekeeping, and personnel records. It affirmed its commitment to legal compliance and industry standards, stating it does not knowingly hire anyone under 18. Midway maintains it is working closely with HelloFresh and federal investigators to resolve the matter. The ongoing probe leaves both companies under scrutiny as compliance with labor laws is assessed.
The Department of Labor has stated that no additional information will be released until the investigation concludes. For now, HelloFresh and Midway Staffing are distancing themselves from the allegations. HelloFresh's global operations depend on partnerships with vendors, making this case critical for its reputation. As Aurora residents await updates, the investigation highlights the growing pressure on companies to ensure ethical labor practices within their supply chains. The outcome could reshape policies for outsourced labor in the U.S. meal kit industry.
