eBay partners with Klarna to expand BNPL options across Europe, offering flexibility for buyers in 7 key markets. New resale features empower users, aligning with eBay's growing focus on convenience and sustainability.
eBay is making strides in buyer convenience by expanding its partnership with Klarna to 7 European countries: the U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Spain, and the Netherlands. Shoppers can now use Klarna's BNPL features like Pay in 3, Pay in 30 days, or extended financing. This comes just in time for the holiday shopping season, where flexibility is key. Klarna's payment features were first launched on eBay in Germany, proving highly successful. According to PYMNTS Intelligence, almost 50% of Gen Z and Millennials used BNPL options in the last year, showing the growing demand for this feature.
eBay is known for its rare finds and pre-loved luxury items, from vintage Rolex watches to collectible trading cards. With Klarna’s payment options, buyers can make high-value purchases more manageable. Klarna also introduces a resale tool to help users relist items they’ve purchased on eBay with ease. This streamlines the process for sellers, adding another layer to eBay's unique marketplace offerings. Avritti Khandurie Mittal, eBay’s VP of Global Payments, said, “We are unlocking greater payment choice and flexibility for eBay shoppers.”
eBay's integration of Klarna coincides with its Authenticity Guarantee, ensuring high-value purchases are verified before shipping. This program, combined with Klarna's payment flexibility, builds trust and encourages more significant purchases. Klarna's David Sykes emphasized the partnership’s value in making buying and selling seamless for millions. In addition, eBay recently announced free selling in the U.K., simplifying listings and payment processes further.
While Klarna is making headlines for its expansion, it faces regulatory challenges. Sweden’s Finansinspektionen fined Klarna $44M for anti-money laundering violations between 2021-2022. Despite this, Klarna is gearing up for a U.S. IPO in early 2025, with an estimated valuation of $20B. This follows years of fluctuating valuations, peaking at $46B in 2021 before dropping to $6.7B in 2022. Klarna’s partnership with eBay may provide a needed boost as the BNPL market faces increased scrutiny worldwide.
