Vinted has made pricing clearer after complaints led to negotiations with the European Commission. Now, the second-hand platform shows the total price upfront, including buyer protection. More clarity is needed on shipping costs.
Vinted is a popular second-hand marketplace. In December 2021, the European Commission and national consumer authorities began talks with Vinted. They received complaints about unclear pricing. Customers were charged a buyer protection fee automatically without knowing it. This went against European consumer laws. Vinted now shows the total price, including the buyer protection fee, upfront. The platform removed ads saying purchases are free. Vinted also gives clear information on refunds and identity verification.
The European Commission is still not completely satisfied. Vinted has not addressed all concerns. They did not clearly state that displayed prices do not include shipping costs. Consumers do not know the minimum shipping costs at the start of their purchase. Consumer associations want Vinted to fix this. They may take further action if Vinted does not improve.
Věra Jourová, European vice-president for Values and Transparency, emphasized the issue. She said, "Second-hand sales between consumers are growing. Sellers and buyers need to know how online marketplaces work and their rights if things go wrong." This highlights the need for clear and transparent pricing on platforms like Vinted.
Vinted's changes are a step in the right direction. They help consumers understand the total cost of their purchases better. But more work is needed. Clear shipping costs are essential for full transparency. Consumers and authorities will keep pushing for these changes. Vinted's response will shape the future of online second-hand marketplaces.
